My daughter had her asd closure via catheter 2 weeks ago. Everything went great. However, she is now comlaining of bad headaches from time to time. Anyone experience this too??? She is not scheduled for her follow up untill the end of February.
Hi my husband had his asd closure in November last year and he also gets headaches now . He has his follow up appointment next week and will be asking why he keeps getting headaches. He never suffered from them before. Just thought I would let you know.
I am a 22 year old female and had a 1.4 cm asd closed via catheter in November. Two days later I had my first migraine with aura. The pain was so horrible my mom rushed me to the hospital thinking I was having a stroke. For the first month after my surgery I was having these painful, debilitating migraines once, sometimes twice a day. The only drug that I've found that helps is Atenolol, which is a beta blocker. Ever since I started taking 12.5mg once a day in the morning, my migraine frequency has been significantly reduced.
My entire life my blood pressure was 100/60. The defect is known to keep blood pressure artificially low. After the device was put into place, my blood pressure returned to a normal rate of 120/80. Again, I'm not a doctor but I've been reading articles that suggest a higher cardiac output after the surgery results in a higher Inter Occular Pressure (IOP) and this eye pressure has been correlated to cause migraines. The only side effect I've noticed with the Atenolol is that it lowers my blood pressure a little too much (sometimes I'm around 90/50) and I'm constantly dizzy. At the same time, I love that I'm not getting migraines now more than once a week.
Most of the articles I've read about new-onset migraines say that at follow ups, people do report less and less migraines the further out from surgery they get. I really hope this is a temporary complication that both your daughter and I start feeling better soon!! I really recommend you talk to her doctor about starting a betablocker.
Sincerely, Chandler
I personally experienced migraines with aura after my ASD closure. I was trying to figure out if there was an association between the headaches and the Plavix-Aspirin combo I was taking. It just seems like the frequency of my headaches increased post-closure which was weird. Which makes me wonder if there really is a link between Interatrial shunts and migraines. ( I was kind of skeptical before)
I am a 45 year old female. I had my ASD repaired via catheter November 9th. I have not had any headaches. I have felt some burning & slight, brief chest pain but it's getting better everyday. The follow up echocardiogram showed everything is fine.
I’m almost six months post cath closure. Had aura migraines for six weeks. Now none:) Doc said it’s common and they normally get better. Good luck!!
Thanks everyone. My daughter is 6 and had never complained of headaches before the closure. She has only had a few short incidents but like I said, she never complained before. She is not on any medication other than "baby aspirin" We have her follow up in several weeks but I think I will try to get in earlier. Thanks again for all your replies :)
I have my ASD closure 8 months before, and has experienced migraine every time after exercise. I have asked the doc for reason and NONE of them can explain. But I have everything checked and the doc said it's just perfect. I have found a lot similar cases and some reported that migraine would disappear later. Hope your daughter would go fine~~
I have been getting the aural lights (no actual migraine pain) for sometime - several years prior to my ASD closure. They aren't triggered with any particular activity and typically go away after taking Asprin, Tylenol, Advil, etc. Wondering - did has anyone else experience this? I never associated these with my ASD closure, but I'm curious about the IOP mentioned above in relation to this.
Hi. I know it’s been a few years. Just wondering if you still get migraines after exercise? This is what I am experiencing as well.
